Etsy Update - Shop Names

Ok, so by now I'm sure you've heard about all the changes Etsy has made on the whole changing your shop name. I had given an account on how I went about changing my shop name, here, before these newest updates were made. And since I see a lot of people still refering to that post, I thought I'd give a few links from Etsy's Storque on their updates. This should make the whole process SO much easier!!

Change is Good

I know I've been absent and quiet for a while. I have a good excuse, I promise! I moved across the country from Santa Fe, NM to Columbus, OH. It took me longer to get everything situated in Santa Fe and then getting settled and looking for a job has been taken longer than I'd like also. But, I have been having way too much fun discovering this new city! New people, new experiences, new places to find and new things to do. I've even gotten to cross off a few things from my 100 List!!

9. Learn to water ski.
I tried water skiing this past weekend and although I didn't quite get the hang of it yet, I'm very close and very sore! It even hurts to type!

78. Go to a drive-in theater.
This past weekend (after the water skiing attempt!) I was treated to a relaxing evening at the drive-in movie theater. :)

I've gotten a new-to-me car also. My uncle was kind enough to pass down my Grandmother's car after she passed away. The Silvery Minnow, as she is now named, is an '89 Mercury Grand Marquis. I drive a boat!!

I am trying to get situated with a job and back on a 'normal' schedule of life, creating and blogging. Please stay in touch and come back to see what's new!!

Shop Promo Swap Results

Well the promotional creations I ended up making for the Trashion Team swap are seed packets. I had small envelopes that I had already made or had ready to go in my stash (of way too many things!). From last years vegetable garden, I had a huge jar of marigold seeds waiting to be used. I added a note with a coupon code and my business cards and tied them up! A bunch of flowers just for you!!

Change is in the Air

Ok, so here's the news - I will be moving on from Santa Fe in the next month. It has been a good 8 years, but it's time to move on. I have been tossing this idea around for awhile and feel this is the time to jump. It's time for a new chapter, new surroundsings, new assessment of life and the future. I will be heading back to my midwest roots, but in a new state - Ohio! Columbus will be my new home for awhile until I can get up on my own two feet again. Don't worry, I will still be creating and sharing with all of you! So, with that said, I am going to try to make the last month I have in Santa Fe as good as I can!!

Starting today, I will be doing a 30 day photography project. I found the image below and am going to have fun with it and try to put a Santa Fe spin on it. I'm excited to get started on it and can't wait to see what I get!!

Patience - A Tribute to my Dear Grandmother

Ok, I'm trying to get back on track here. I have been absent for a few weeks with good cause. And I will say now, this post is not an easy one to write. I was called on Saturday, May 7th by my mom, saying "Come now, get here. Grandma is not doing well." I found the first flight I could out of NM and left that day for OH. If you remember an earlier post, my grandmother has been in and out of the hospital for the past few months. Just getting older, her body wearing out. And on May 8th, Mother's Day, with all her children and some grandchildren by her side, she passed on.

My Grandmother, even though I always lived far away, passed on to me (also by way of my mom) a great strength - patience. A strength you wouldn't quite count in today's world, and one that is greatly lacking in my opinion. Patience with family and friends, with your job and those you work with, when waiting in line - anywhere! I am proud to have this trait passed on to me and I know it comes by way of my Grandmother.

She was an amazing quilter, beginning when she was just a little girl and lasting till her final 85th year. Another trait passed on was quilting (again also passed down through my mom). I am proud to have a three generational quilt with all the quilting done by my grandmother, all the sewing and piecing done by my mom, and all the fabrics picked by me. The only three generational quilt in the family. Obviously one of my favorites.

I will greatly miss my grandmother. She was a quiet strength of the family that I am already missing. The house isn't the same without her. But I know she is there, watching, quietly. Patiently. She waited until her entire family had been there to see her from near and far. Until we all had lunch (in two shifts!!) and were settled again, when she finally said she had had a full life. Full of family, friends and the OH community she loved.

I love you Grandma Bertke and thank you for everything you have passed on. I cherish those things, everyday. Ok, I need more tissues!

I have been brainstorming different ideas for promotional items for a promo swap with one of my Etsy Teams. I have been really struggling with this since it's my first time doing something like this, and have been at a loss for something to create. I want it to be something handmade and that reflects what I create in my shop. After a Google search came up with very little, I sat down and began making a list of some ideas. Resolutions Revisited 2

So another update on where I stand on my resolutions. The fact that I keep coming back to them and reporting to you is helping me stick to them and continue to push through when I don't quite feel like it. Here is my original list and my update back in February. So I wanted to update you again on my progress.

Why I Do What I Do - Part 2 - My Grandmothers

I wanted to introduce you to two other people that have influenced and helped me along my creative paths. They have influence my quilting and sewing side. They are both quilters and seamstresses that have inspired me to continue to carry on these traditions.

As I type this my Grandma Bertke (below) is being release from the hospital this morning after a weekend scare with really low blood sugar levels. Hopefully she will be back sitting at her quilts, quilting away!!

A Day Off

Over the past several weeks I have been taking stock of goals, ideals, projects - life. I have been creating my 100 List, or Bucket List. This is my final installment of 10!!

91. Learn French.
92. Climb a 14,000+ mountain peak.
93. Hike to Lake Katherine in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, NM.
94. Build/design my own home.
95. Live in a tropical area/town/climate.
96. Get rid of most of my possessions and live without clutter.

Birthday Week Poll

I am still trying to decide what to do on my Birthday. The last few years my Birthday has been less than eventful and this year I want to do something. Anything! I have been toying with the idea of heading to Ojo Caliente Spa here in NM. It's a hot mineral springs just north of Santa Fe. Ojo Caliente is the only hot springs in the world with a combination of four different types of mineral water—lithium, iron, soda, and arsenic. And best of all they have a mud pool! You cover yourself in the mud and then let the mud dry in the warm NM sun. It sounds amazing!

Then there's the other side of that coin - heading up the mountain to the Santa Fe Ski Basin and learning to snow board. Ski Santa Fe has some great beginner deals where for less than $100 you can learn to ski or snow board. (Mind you this option would also cross an item off my 100 List!) Oh so tempting and would probably have to hit Ojo Caliente or 10 Thousand Waves spa afterwards!

My other idea was to head to Albuquerque to spend the day shopping! Probably mostly window shopping, but just the thought of getting out of Santa Fe sounds fun. There are the must-hit shops such as Anthropologie, Crate and Barrel (both at ABQ Uptown), The Buffalo Exchange and Shoes on a Shoestring. What more could a girl ask for!? And of course, finding a little sweet spot to have lunch at.

My Birthday is coming up on Sunday!! I love my Birthday and this is my favorite time of year. It's the first day of spring, the daffolis are blooming and trees are budding, the birds are widely chirpping, the days are warmer and we all begin to shake off the cold gray days of winter. An Obsession

I wanted to let you all into a previous phase in my creating and art work. For several years I was obsessed with making what I called my Rollies. I would take old magazine pages and create paper beads. Hundreds and thousands of them and then attach them to canvases. Mostly creating abstract color fields.

After the series of color fields I began trying to create images or forms in the design of the rollies. I was completely obsessed and could not create or make anything at the time I was making my rollies. I loved the repetitive nature of creating the beads. I could still watch tv and movies and continue creating all the while. I would stay up way too late and wake early with the nagging feeling that I had to get back to work. I lived and breathed my rollies for almost 2 complete years. During this time I had a two person show at a here in Santa Fe and entered pieces into 2 juried art shows.

I could never imagine my life without my rollies. I just figured my obsessive compulsive rollies would always be a part of my life. But unfortunately, as life loves to do, things changed. To date, I haven't touched my rollies in almost 1 1/2 years. Not a one. I went from making 45 pieces in a year to two pieces one year then one piece the next and now nothing. I do miss creating them, they were such a calming thing for me, a meditation. I have several hanging on my walls in my apartment and look at them every day wondering if I will pick it back up again. I hope to, no, I will.

Why I Do What I Do - Part 1 - My Grandfather

I want to start a small series of posts giving you an insight of how and why I create, my initial inspirations and those who sparked my interests in arts and crafting. I began as a little kid painting Paint by Numbers. My grandfather was in and out of the hospital for years when I was young and he would bring them home for me from the hospital. My grandmother still has the largest one I painted, framed and hanging in her living room.

My grandfather would encourage me to draw, and draw from my head. No tracing pictures from books. "Draw me something." He would say. He always pushed me to use my imagination and to do things on my own.

I wonder what inspiration he would give me these days.....

Goals, Goals and More Goals - Resolutions Revisited

So if you remember I wrote out my resolutions back in January here. Let's see how I've been doing....

1. Run a 5k in February and a marathon with my brother.

I am happy to report that I ran my very first 5K run on Saturday, February 12th!! I ran the Cupid's Chase here in Santa Fe and loved it! It was a great run and I am happy with my results and time. Training continues for future runs!

2. Redo my Etsy store.

As you all may know by now, Marang97 is now Marang Studios. I am working on taking more/better photos of my pieces and writing better descriptions. Seems to be working so far!

7. Write more blog entries.

I have started Scoutie Girl's 52 Weeks of Blogging Your Passion and it's been working out swimmingly! Loving the content so far and the topics seem fun and challenging but not too difficult.

11. Create my 100 List.

If you've been following along, this one is just over the half way point!!

51. Keep a journal on me at all times. (I have done this and since my purse had gotten stolen, I've not had one on me.)
52. Keep a camera on me at all times. (I do have one most of the times, but I need one that is completely point and shoot.)
53. Own a computer/laptop.
54. Be more aware of peoples feelings, the setting, the atmosphere, and things going on around me.
55. Own a sports car.
56. Have TWO Christmas trees.
57. Donate my own money to a charity.
58. Volunteer.
59. Adopt a pet from a rescue shelter.

Before You Change Your Etsy Shop Name - A Few Things To Remember

Oh my! I forgot when I opened my original shop on Etsy almost 4 years ago, all the work that went into opening it in the first place. If you've done this on Etsy then you know what I'm talking about. But if you don't and you've been thinking that the spur-of-the-moment shop name you may have picked out just isn't working for you anymore, then read on.

I had began on Etsy in February of 2008 and entered my shop name as Marang97 since I was, and had been, using it in other aspects online. But over the last few years it's been wearing on me. So, with 2011 quickly approaching I began thinking about a complete shop make-over. New shop name, new images, new creations, new lines, new pretty much everything! It's quite the undertaking! So if you are thinking of opening a new shop, or even a second shop, read on to make sure you cover all your bases.

1. First things first - your shop name. Whether it be your actual name, a shop name, or handle of some sort, just make sure you like it. That it fits you and your brand.

2. You will also have to have a second email when changing your shop name. You will not be able to use the same one from the first shop.

3. You will need your banner and avatar, along with your About Info, Shop Title, Shop Announcement, Shop Policies and Message to Buyer letter. If you are using all the same information, then you will be all set. But it you want to revamp all these it's easiest to have it all ready.

4. You will need your PayPal account set up and verified with your bank account.

5. If you are involved in any Etsy Street Teams the admins. will need to be updated.

6. Don't forget your Flickr account. Update your profile name and website address.

7. If you have an Etsy Mini on your blog, you will need to recreate that and replace the code from your old shop. While you are there in your blog, make sure you update your shop anywhere you may have it listed in your profile.

8. Your Twitter account will need to be updated. I changed my username and anywhere that my link comes up in my profile.

9. If you have a Facebook Fan Page, don't forget those links too. Update and while you're there, let all your fans know about your changes.

10. If you are associated with other blogs or websites. For example - Lovely Clusters, Cosa Verde, Handmade Spark, Craftstylish, Youtube, Ebay or whatever, make sure these all get updated.

11. Google Analytics, if you have it, can accommodate several sites. I have my old site still receiving hits and now my new site. I am always interested where people are finding me.

12. Of course, one last thing I did on my old shop page was to put a link to my new shop page, and vise versa (click on the links to see examples on those pages). I wanted to make sure people knew I am an established shop with perfect feedback. Also all of your sold items still are up on your old page and this will let people know what you've done in the past and possibly what you are still creating.

You should be set to go now. After having my first shop open for three years, I had forgotten all the beginning steps and then realized all the places I had spread to. It was, at least for me, a huge hurdle but I am much happier in my new shop! Good luck if you are thinking about doing this or are in the process!

Valentine's Day - An Actual Holiday?

In the past years, Valentine's Day has been deemed a "Hallmark Holiday" meaning the Hallmark card shops have used this day as a marketing ploy to boost sales. But as a hopeless romantic, I would dismiss this idea reverting back to my Catholic up bringing, thinking, 'it's a Saint's Day or Feast Day'. I was a bit disappointed when I actually dove into researching this.

Wikipedia goes on in length about Saint Valentine. And it's an informative history of the day, February 14th, and the possible man behind it. But, I was most disappointed that not even the Church knows exactly who St. Valentine is, or if he even stood for love and romance. Humpf! Bah!

Well, being the romantic that I am, this day will be about love! And for me, always will.

Flowers in Winter

I want to introduce you to my Flower Necklaces that are exclusive to Jane Sauer Gallery. And also give you an insight on the beginning process of making them. They are so fun to wear and people stop me every time I am modeling them. And they are PERFECT in the chilly temps to keep you warm and keep spring and summer flowers with you always!

I start by making the flowers - lots of flowers!! I try to make sure to have several each of all different colors and sizes. This will give me the chance to layout the design of the necklace and play around with the size, color scheme and layout. I typically don't draft out my designs, but work intuitively with the flowers until just the right design comes out.

{I even have Jack helping from time to time!}

I typically use this way of working whenever I am creating these large necklaces, the rosette necklaces or my headbands. It's a fun and spontaneous way of working that keeps my ideas fresh and new.

A Plan in Motion

After a long weekend which included everything from enjoying 70 degree weather to now 9 degree weather, skidding off the road in a blizzard and a long road trip, I am back home to enjoy the rest of the week in single to negative degree weather and snow. Yipee. The road trip gave me time to sit down and make a year plan for my blog. So let's jump to it!

I am trying to make Marang Studios more useful for me and especially for you guys! So to narrow it down and get it focused I've planned that Marangs Musings is a place for insights into my creative outlet - Marang Studios. You will discover my inspirations and creative drive in hopes that you will find your individual uniqueness; all the while being environmentally conscience.

Happy Monday - My Qwest to De-clutter

As you all may be aware of by now, I'm a packrat. Last year I tried a 30 day challenge of de-cluttering by getting rid of one thing a day for 30 days. I don't think it lasted but two weeks, but that was 14 things gone!! A friend spoke of the 30 Day Minimalist Challenge on Facebook so I figured I'd give it another go.

Day 1 - Old jars that I filled with Hot Chocolate Mix and gifted to friends.

Day 2 - An orchid that didn't quite make it...

Day 3 - Pair of boots that will be donated to the Goodwill.

In conjunction with my New Year's Resolutions I've realized I needed more goals in life. Things to look forward to, accomplish, set my sights on. I've read about the 100 List before and have had it bouncing around in my head ever since. So, I've begun my list. It may take a while to complete so I am going to create 10 small lists at a time. Here's my first 10.

It's that time of year and everyone seems to be asking the same thing - "What's your New Year's Resolution(s)?" Resolutions seem to be ways to make yourself better, happier, more well-rounded. So why do we always put them off or ignore them completely? Or not make them at all? Why do we tend to wait til the first of the year to make them, or try to, into a realization?

Maybe because it's the new year, a new beginning, rebirth.

My 2010 was full of stress, grief, loss, unhappiness, drama and all around somewhat unproductive at its worst. At its best - thrilling, full of self realizations, growth, love, and warm pleasent days. So for 2011, an actual list. Written out. Published. Let's get to it....

Ok, time to buckle down. Get back to it. Taking the bull by the horns!! The past few weeks for me have been quite eye opening personally. So many things have been happening that a time of re-assessment is in order. That being said, let's not waste any time!!

The Joy of Cooking - How I Learned to Cook and a How-To

As many of you know - I always hated to cook. I refused to learn growing up and would always say I would have someone to cook for me. And I did, until 2 years ago. I was then forced to learn, by necessity. So I had to start slow. I began making dishes I remembered being made or simple recipes I could find. Keeping it simple really helped; recipes that only needed a few ingredients and didn't take long to make. And soon I was asking for a slow cooker and cooking utensils for Christmas!

In the last two years now, I have succeeded. Not to the point of gourmet chef, mind you. But no one has gotten sick or died from my cooking, so to me, it's a success!! I even attempted Thanksgiving Dinner last year. And, god help me, I am thinking about it again this year!

I have even began creating my own dishes that I have no recipes for. And here, I am going to share with you one of my latest concoctions. You make think I'm crazy and believe me you won't be the first, or last!! But anyway, introducing my Skillet Eggplant Parmesan. NOTE: The eggplants I am using a small, miniature eggplants that are 3 1/2-5 inches long, a good size for one to two people.

Skillet Eggplant Parmesan
Serves 2 as a side dish

4-6 Small Eggplants sliced
4 medium tomatoes diced
2 tbsp Grated Parmesan Cheese
1 tbsp Olive Oil
Salt
Italian Seasoning

Heat skillet on medium heat. Add Olive Oil and heat. Add eggplant and cook til just starting to soften. Add tomatoes and let cook until skins have fallen off and tomatoes are mushy. Add salt and Italian Seasoning. Mix together. Add Parmesan cheese while continuously stirring. Turn heat off and serve immediately. YUMMY!

I began making my Carnation Flower Pins 3 years ago (I can't believe it's been that long!!) and have now expanded to Chrysanthemums, daisies, Forget-Me-Nots, completely abstract and unique flowers and several more. But my favorites still have to be where it all started - the Carnations.

I know I've been a little scattered lately with my postings. I am still trying to squeeze in the time and effort to blog. I have been mulling over a few things to possibly help tailor this blogging thing more to my style. I'm not used to writing and am NOT a writer, so topics and content have been a little more challenging than I expected. But please stick around! There's still plenty more to come!

As a little girl did you ever play with paper dolls? I sure did! I loved those things! I came across this site this morning and it's time to be a kid again and get the kids involved!! The Paper Doll Project was started by Anastasia Shookaty from Kyiv, Ukraine. You download the doll and begin to make dresses and outfits for her. This sounds like a fun little project to get everyone's creative juices flowing. I know I'm gonna play, will you?
